Examples of great rebranding

Here are some great examples of rebranding, as pulled together by @liammckay who gives us his Top 50.  Below are my favorites from his list.

You’ll notice lower case letters are very popular in rebranding.  I believe this is because lower case letters give your brand a more “personal” feel, which fits in with today’s shift toward social media and personal connections with major brands.

90210 + Dr. Pepper = Product Placement Gone Bad (or a new drinking game!)

When it comes to music, it is much easier to make a longer list of bad music than it is good music.  Same goes for marketing… A couple posts ago we knocked Bank of America for their horrible new signage. Today the victim is Dr. Pepper.  (and so starts a series of posts, “Bad Marketing”).

I’m watching the new 90210 (don’t ask) and couldn’t help notice the overly done product placement of Dr. Pepper.  There is nothing wrong with product placement, but this is wrong. There is nothing even remotely subtle about it.  I thought at first they were just placing the product in diner scenes which at least makes sense being that it’s a restaurant (even though it’s way over done). Unfortunately they didn’t stop there or anywhere…

The actors go on a road trip and one offers the other a drink and holds up the can up facing the camera, in a way that you only see on 1950’s soda pop commercials. They then reach into a cooler full of DP, all perfectly placed, with logo out and the camera holds the shot for 5 seconds too long (which feels like 5 minutes). A few minutes later the camera gets a nice close up of them turning the radio up, with a nice cold can of DP in their hand.  It’s in the diner, at home, the school cafeteria, in the car, everywhere.

This happens over and over again, about every 4 minutes. If you’re looking for a good laugh and perhaps a new drinking game, this may be it.  Bottoms Up!

How to direct message someone on Twitter who isn’t following you

Sometimes you just need to send someone a direct message on Twitter who isn’t following you.  Twitter doesn’t really let you do this, and I can see why (to avoid people from spamming, etc).  However, sometimes you may need to.

Use this for good, not evil…

And simply replace “username” with username of the person you need to message.  To direct message would be:  http://twitter.com/direct_messages/create/modassic

Enjoy!

Just cause you can doesn’t mean you should…

There is such a growing amount of amazing technology and new applications for us to utilize into our marketing efforts every day. With many of these new technologies, you can now reach the most detailed demographics, hold virtual conference calls and instantly respond and communicate with clients from anywhere in the world.

Many of these technologies have a well deserved spot in the modern company’s marketing mix, but don’t abandon the most classic, and well tested techniques. Here are some examples:

  1. Rather than spending 2hrs on Twitter, spend 1hr tweeting and another hour hand writing and mailing (with paper, pen and a stamp) thank you notes to clients.
  2. Rather than firing off 20 emails, respond by phone. We all need to hear human voices every now and then.
  3. Near a client’s office or a vendor during your lunch break?  Stop in and say hello. For bonus points bring a Starbucks or even better, a Jamba Juice (I recommend the Razzamatazz).

In many industries you can easily run a very successful business right from your PDA, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should.  Find the balance.
