90210 + Dr. Pepper = Product Placement Gone Bad (or a new drinking game!)

When it comes to music, it is much easier to make a longer list of bad music than it is good music.  Same goes for marketing… A couple posts ago we knocked Bank of America for their horrible new signage. Today the victim is Dr. Pepper.  (and so starts a series of posts, “Bad Marketing”).

I’m watching the new 90210 (don’t ask) and couldn’t help notice the overly done product placement of Dr. Pepper.  There is nothing wrong with product placement, but this is wrong. There is nothing even remotely subtle about it.  I thought at first they were just placing the product in diner scenes which at least makes sense being that it’s a restaurant (even though it’s way over done). Unfortunately they didn’t stop there or anywhere…

The actors go on a road trip and one offers the other a drink and holds up the can up facing the camera, in a way that you only see on 1950′s soda pop commercials. They then reach into a cooler full of DP, all perfectly placed, with logo out and the camera holds the shot for 5 seconds too long (which feels like 5 minutes). A few minutes later the camera gets a nice close up of them turning the radio up, with a nice cold can of DP in their hand.  It’s in the diner, at home, the school cafeteria, in the car, everywhere.

This happens over and over again, about every 4 minutes. If you’re looking for a good laugh and perhaps a new drinking game, this may be it.  Bottoms Up!

  1. Hmm. I’m suddenly so very thirsty for some Dr. Pepper.
Sprint has been doing the same thing during episodes of 24. It really is getting a bit too obvious.

  2. Shoot, I should of written about 24 then… it sounds way cooler than 90210!
